Kim was born May 17, 1959 in Artesia to Don and Janice Johnston. She was raised as a child in Christ, the daughter of rural Methodist minister. Kim’s father was an entrepreneur, in her high school years she held many jobs within his businesses. She spent her mornings before school, driving a truck for her dad delivering Golden Crust bread and Clardy’s milk throughout the Pecos Valley. On weekends she worked in his wood yard splitting and loading firewood. In June 1978, she married, William Crockett. Together they started Crockett Trucking where she worked as a driver and forklift operator in the oilfield, raising two sons. She later left Artesia, finding a home in Deadwood, South Dakota where she worked in the famous Saloon No. 10 as a poker dealer, gaining a reputation that led to her dealing twice at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas, NV. She returned to New Mexico to follow her passion to become a police officer. She graduated New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy in 1994 quickly rising through the ranks to Detective. She spent most of her career with Roswell Police Department, later serving Tucumcari Police Department. Her greatest passion was protecting people, especially children.
