Wayland Newberry

February 16, 1942 — September 23, 2020

Wayland Bert Newberry, 78 of Artesia NM

Wayland Bert Newberry, passed away on September 23, 2020 in Lubbock, Texas.

Wayland was born February 16, 1942 to Bert and Doris Newberry in Artesia, NM, where he was raised and graduated from Artesia High School. At 18-years-old he was hired on at the Turkey Track Ranch where it all began, his lifelong profession of “cowboy’n’”. Not long after he signed on at the ranch he was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. When his time was up, he returned to the ranch where he progressed from rookie to foreman and became a cowboy legend.

In the early 1990’s, he began competing in ranch rodeos. If there was a ranch rodeo to enter, Turkey Track Ranch was in the arena. They were most definitely the team to beat, and not many did. Many ranch rodeo championship signs line the highway by the entrance into headquarters. The ranch won the opportunity to compete in an even bigger event, multiple times, The WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo in Amarillo, Texas. Wayland looked forward to that event every year and Turkey Track Ranch won the Team Branding one year and had placed Third in the World. In 2000, they won the New Mexico State Championship Ranch Rodeo.

The buckles, saddles and rodeo signs were not his only accomplishments. Wayland received a Ten Year Cumulative Breeder Award from the American Quarter Horse Association in 2008 . He was Jigger Boss for the WRCA from 1996 to present and a Lifelong member of the WRCA. He was honored and given the title of Living Legend in 2007. Among Wayland’s peers he was respected by many. In 2000, he was featured in the Jim Jennings article, “Good Horses, Good Cowboys”, which appeared in America’s Horse Magazine, highlighting who Wayland really was.

Wayland married the love of his life, Cynda in December of 1990 in Carlsbad, New Mexico.

He is survived by his wife; daughter Ina Sanchez and her husband Dominic; sons John David; Bobby Newberry and his wife Christi, and Billy Phegley and his wife Vicki Nicholls; stepdaughters Brenda Zentz and her husband Tracy; Melonie Lynch and her husband Brandon; Stepson Brian James and his wife Judy; sister Sybil Smith and her husband, BJ.; grandkids Cora, Brylie, Brady, Chris, Todd, Kyle, Amber, Kevin, Doug and Tara; great grandson Aiden; nieces Pam Herring and her husband Jimmy, Larissa Jackson and her husband Jody; nephew John Wayland; great nieces, LeAnn, Baili, Jade, Jewel, Brittany Johnson and her husband Mak; great- great nephew Kale Johnson; and numerous cousins.

Wayland was proceeded in death by his parents and brother-in-law BJ Smith.

"It was so very hard to put into words all of the greatness Wayland possessed. If he wasn’t giving you a hard time or picking on you, he was talking business! He was quite the character for all that really knew his quirky personality! I couldn’t put it all down in just a few short paragraphs. He was idolized by many and will never be forgotten! Many lives he touched and he didn’t even know. So many stories that should be told! We all will miss you deeply. There will never be another Cowboy more truer than you!" Ina
