A celebration of life service will be held for Joseph (Joe) Thomas Cherry, Sr at 10:00 am, June
18th at First United Methodist Church. Mr. Cherry 79, passed from this life on May 26th, 2022
in Houston, TX.
Joe was born on October 5th, 1942 in South Boston, MA to Michael Frances Cherry and
Margaret Elizabeth Soulther Cherry. He grew up in a home surrounded by twenty brothers and
sisters. Growing up in Boston, Joe competed in boxing tournaments, and was a Golden Glove
Boxer.
Throughout his life, Joe was in innovator and entrepreneur. He owned his own company and
did contract work for businesses such as Home Depot and Walmart. He placed scaffolding on
the Statue of Liberty for renovation work that was done in 1982. He also served as a
contractor for Houston Refinery. During that time, he also started a food truck business to
provide breakfast and lunch for the workers at the refinery. He worked for MIT in Cheyenne,
WY as a salesperson.
Joe was a loving and kind man, and a great supporter and caregiver. He would give you the
shirt off his back. He served on the Board of Grammys House, and did numerous renovation
projects for them. He also lived at the RV Ranch Escapee Park and built porches and did
renovations on the casitas.
Joe was also an avid golfer. He golfed in New Zealand, and won a set of clubs by making a
hole-in-one. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and a faithful participant of
the Seeker Sunday school class.
Joe is preceded in death by his parents and nineteen of his siblings. He is survived by his wife
Jan Walker Cherry of Artesia; son Joesph Cherry, Jr (Sara); two daughters Chrissy Cherry Furst
(Kevin) and Dawn Marie Cummings (Ed); sister Mary Eagen (Bob). He is also survived by
sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Cremation has taken place and burial will be at Woodbine Cemetery. Reverend Monty Leavell
will officiate at the services. Memorials may be directed to: First United Methodist Church Building Fund.
