Joe was born on April 17, 1933 in Artesia; the son of Jose Heredia Alvarado and Bonifacia Garcia Alvarado.

In 1960, Joe went to work with the NM Taxation Department as a Field Compliance Officer. He continued his endeavors with the family farm creating with his brother, Ismael Garcia Alvarado, Alvarado Bros. Farm where they both raised cattle under the 2 Bar A brand. Joe dearly loved his family especially his grandchildren and the love of his life, Cruz, whom he affectionately referred to as "Sugar". He thoroughly enjoyed family camping trips to the mountains. His greatest joys were the opportunities he had to hunt with family at his side. He made it his mission to continually teach his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the value and importance of strengthening their walk in faith and prayer. Joe was a pillar in the family. He gave much and demanded little. His "heartprint" has been left on each of our hearts.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ismael Alvarado, sisters Consuelo Lopez and Herminia Lopez, great-grandchildren Kalynne Marie Flores and Matthew Dakota Alvarado.

Survivors include his wife Cruz Alvarado; sons David Alvarado, Oscar Alvarado and Joseph Alvarado; daughters Sylvia A Flores and Anna Maria Barrera; 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
