Margaret Muncy

October 22, 1920 — March 15, 2002

A resident of Artesia, New Mexico since 1927 passed away on March 15, 2002, in Ruidoso, New Mexico, she was 81 years of age. Bert N. Muncy, Jr., Margarets husband of 61 years, preceded her in death in December of 1999. Margaret was the only daughter of A.P. Doc Mahone, former mayor of Artesia, New Mexico, and Flossie Mahone, both deceased. Margaret was born in Maude, Texas on October 22, 1920, and moved, with her parents to Artesia from Lubbock, Texas in 1927. Her father Doc Mahone came to Artesia as owner and operator of the Artesia Dr. Pepper Bottling Company. Margaret graduated from Artesia High School in 1937, and married the boy next door, Bert N. Muncy, Jr. in 1938. She was a member of the Artesia First United Methodist Church for almost 75 years. Margarets fondest memories were always of her church., where she served willingly in various positions. Margaret was also a member of PEO, a womens service organization, for over five decades, and was very active in the Artesia Community Concert Association for over 35 years. Margaret and Bert were actively involved in the oil and gas business for most of their lives. Bert and Margaret began retirement in 1995 when they sold their interests in Bilco Supply Company, LM Drilling Company, and Larue and Muncy Production Company. Margarets retirement, like Berts, was soon marred by the onset of Alzheimer disease which ultimately claimed her life late Friday afternoon. Margaret is survived by two sons, A. Nelson Muncy, an Engineer in Artesia, and Martin B. Muncy, an attorney in Las Cruces, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Margaret is also survived by two grandchildren, Jason Muncy of Dallas, Texas and Kim Muncy Haydon of San Antonio, Texas, and two great grand daughters, Taylor and Lauren Haydon, also of San Antonio. Margaret will also be missed by her daughters-in-law, Pat Muncy of Artesia, and Dr. Bonnie Muncy of Las Cruces. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at the Woodbine Cemetery.
