Leonardo Moreno

December 1, 1957 — October 3, 2025

Leo passed away peacefully, in the comfort of his home in Roswell, surrounded by his friends and family. Leo knew no strangers and loved talking to everyone he was around. If you were talking to him, he was sure to put a smile on your face.

Throughout his life, Leo had several jobs. These ranged from shelling pecans during the Door of Opportunity days to janitorial services for BLM in Carlsbad and local Artesia restaurants. Some of his favorites like La Fonda, KFC/Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Henry's, and Nina's. His favorite job, by far, was serving as a crossing guard for Yeso & Central Elementary Schools. Leo took great pride in ensuring the children's safety and would often shake his fist at people he thought were driving too fast through the school zones. Leo was an athlete in the Special Olympics, participating in cycling, Bocce, and other competitions. Leo was always excited about taking home a medal. Leo was a world traveler. He enjoyed several cruises to Mexico, Alaska, and Canada, and experienced life to the fullest. Leo loved taking vacations, even if that meant staying at the local Hotel in Artesia or going to Ruidoso for the weekend. Leo loved music and enjoyed celebrating any festivity. If there were a party, Leo would be sure to be there, excited and ready to dance. Spending time with Leo was an adventure. His newest adventure led him to move to Roswell. Leo loved his God, independence, his family, his friends, and life.

Leo touched many hearts and made many lifelong friends. If you were ever fortunate enough to be a part of his life, he often wondered how you were doing. When Leo wanted to chat, he would go through his list, calling to wish you the best, remind you of a visit, a Coke you had promised, or maybe to invite you to a party he was planning. He loved his Dallas Cowboys, but most of all, he enjoyed his days listening to music and planning the next party to dance with the ladies. He truly enjoyed talking to his friends and family.

Leo was preceded in death by his mother, Jesusita Fuentes; his stepfather, Ben Fuentes; his brother, Joe Ornelas Sr; his sister, Virginia Alvarez; and his nephew, Eddy Ornelas. His survivors include his brother, Mike Fuentes; his nephews, Joe Ornelas Jr., Kerry Ornelas, Barry Ornelas, and Jerrod Ornelas; his niece, Idajo Palma; and many friends at Aspire he called family.

A Memorial Service will be held for Leo at 2:00 pm on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Terpening & Son Chapel.
