LaVerne Gressett

A lifelong resident of Artesia, LaVerne, age 92 passed away peacefully on December 7, 2025, after a brief illness.

She was born March 24, 1933, in Artesia, NM, to Clarence C. Grimlan and Ceigal Carroll Grimlan. 

She graduated from Artesia High School in 1951 and still stayed in contact with remaining members of that class. After high school, she attended Draughns Business College, Lubbock, TX. In later years, she attended Seminary Extension, receiving her diploma in Biblical Studies.

She married William “Bill” Gressett, August 7, 1955, in Artesia. Together they raised daughters Judy and Becky, until Bill’s passing in 1994. Over the years, LaVerne enjoyed watching her daughters, five grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren performing in sports, awards, music, dance recitals, and all they performed in. She enjoyed painting classes and being with her “painting friends.” Also having bible studies at church and in her home. She worked for many years as secretary at Zia School and retired in 1993. LaVerne’s happy place, besides her home, was the property they purchased in the mountains. She loved takin family and friends there. She is preceded in death by husband – William Allen “Bill” Gressett; parents: Clarence and Ceigal Grimlan; Great grandson, Elijah Garcia (son of Stephen).

LaVerne is survived by daughter, Judy Willard, (Steve). Grandsons, Allen Willard; and Kevin Willard, (Brianna). Daughter, Becky Willis, (Blackie Moreno). Grand children, Mike Garcia, Sarah Owens (Chris), Stephen Garcia. Great grand-children, Ella Willard, Noah Reese (Hannah), Kailianne Reese, Kenyon Reese. Sisters – Linna Nivens, “Claude”; Delma Jean Ingram, (Kenneth); and Mardell Butler, as well as many extended family members and friends.

We would like to thank J&J Home Care of Artesia, as well as Good Life assisted living and Enhabit Hospice of Carlsbad, NM for the excellent care they provided for mom.
