Jose Chavez

Jose M. Chavez Quezada, lovingly known as Chema or Don Chema, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on August 14, 1933, in Aldama, Chihuahua, and spent his life wherever his children were, because being close to family was always his greatest priority.

Jose was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carolina H.Chavez Arevalo; his son, Lazaro Chavez Arevalo; his grandchildren, Jade Chavez, Jackie Gonzalez and Pablo Arevalo Portillo; and all ofhis brothers and sisters. He was the last of his generation, now reunited with them all.

He leaves behind a legacy that is strong, joyful, and full of love. Jose was the proud father of 12 children: Gregorio, Augustin, Ceci, Pablo, Eva, Adan, Ana, Manuel, Heriberto, Lazaro (who preceded him in death), Socorro, and Milagros. He is also survived by more than 35 grandchildren, over 25 great-grandchildren, and a handful of great-great-great-grandchildren, all of whom carry on his legacy.

Chema loved his family deeply. His children were his greatest pride and his greatest concern, and he always made sure to call and check on them. He was the life of the party, known for his jokes, his animated storytelling filled with great exaggeration, and the way he spoke with his hands and arms, always bringing laughter to those around him.

He lived a full and well-lived life, rich with love, laughter, and generations of family who exist because of him.

The family would like to personally thank Jose for the life he gave us, for starting the family he did, and for staying with us as long as he could. We are big and mighty because of him.

A viewing will be held on Thursday from 2:00 to 6:00 PM at Terpening & Son Mortuary in Artesia, New Mexico.Funeral services will take place on Friday at 2:00 PM, with burial to follow at Woodbine Cemetery.

Jose M. Chavez Quezada, conocido con mucho cariño como Chema o Don Chema, falleció en paz el 17 de enero de 2026, a los 92 años de edad. Nació el 14 de agosto de 1933 en Aldama, Chihuahua, y vivió su vida en todos los lugares donde estaban sus hijos, porque para él lo más importante siempre fue estar cerca de su familia.

Jose fue precedido en la muerte por su esposa Carolina H.Chavez Arevalo, su hijo Lazaro Chavez Arevalo, sus nietos Jade Chavez y Jackie Gonzalez, y todos sus hermanos y hermanas. Fue el último de su generación, ahora reunido con ellos.

Deja un legado grande, fuerte y lleno de amor. Jose fue padre orgulloso de 12 hijos: Gregorio, Augustin, Ceci, Pablo, Eva, Adan, Ana, Manuel, Heriberto, Lazaro (quien lo precedió en la muerte), Socorro y Milagros. También le sobreviven más de 35 nietos, más de 25 bisnietos, y un puñado de tataranietos, quienes continúan su legado.

Jose amaba profundamente a su familia. Sus hijos eran su mayor orgullo y también su mayor preocupación. Siempre se aseguraba de llamar, de estar al pendiente y de saber que todos estuvieran bien. Era el alma de la fiesta, conocido por sus bromas, sus historias del pasado llenas de exageración, y por hablar siempre con las manos y los brazos, sacando sonrisas y risas a todos.

Vivió una vida plena y bien vivida, llena de amor, risas y generaciones de familia que existen gracias a él.

La familia quiere agradecerle personalmente a Jose por la vida que nos dio, por la familia que formó y por haberse quedado con nosotros el mayor tiempo posible. Somos grandes y fuertes gracias a él.

El velorio se llevará a cabo el jueves de 2:00 a 6:00 de la tardeen Terpening & Son Mortuary en Artesia, Nuevo México.Los servicios funerarios se celebrarán el viernes a las 2:00 de la tarde, con entierro a seguir en el Woodbine Cemetery.
