Jessie Smith

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 PM, Monday, June 10, at First Baptist Church for Jessie Nell Smith of Artesia, New Mexico.

Mrs. Smith, 91, died June 5, 2019 at her home.

Pastor Ty Houghtaling will officiate at the services with burial to follow the services at Twin Oaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Dennis Jenkins, Bruce Waldrip, Warren Hanson, Justin Jenkins, Nicolas Jenkins, and Daniel Dixon. Honorary pallbearers will be Stanley Waldrip, and Dave Shields.

Jessie was born February 27, 1928 in Paint Rock TX the daughter of Fletcher Cape and Etta (Fisher) Cape. She was a longtime Artesia resident after moving here in the 1950's from Corona, N.M.

On October 16, 1959 she was married to Raymond Smith in Carlsbad, N.M.

Jessie was a loving wife and mother. She worked as a telephone operator, a school cafeteria server, and a caregiver. She attended First Baptist Church and was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. Jessie enjoyed crocheting, sewing and made numerous clothes and afghans for her children and grandchildren. She loved her cats and getting to spend time with her family. She will be greatly missed, but we will see her again someday.

Jessie was preceded in death by her parents; daughters Guyra Jackson and Jacqueline Smith; and seven siblings.

She is survived by her husband Raymond "Jack" Smith of the family home; son Dennis Jenkins and wife Julie of Lake Arthur, N.M.; daughters Sandy Smith and Jan Waldrip and husband Bruce all of Artesia; grandchildren Shelley Jenkins of Artesia, Justin Jenkins and wife Laura of Lake Arthur, Tara Parent and husband Dennis of Georgia, Kallie Waldrip of Oregon, Chelsea Willever of Artesia, Danny Jackson, Jr. and wife Gracie of North Carolina, Cathey Bartlett and husband Chad of Artesia, Kim Jackson of North Carolina, Stacey Jackson-Hill of North Carolina, Megan Jenkins of Artesia, Nicolas Jenkins of Lake Arthur, and Ryen Jenkins of Lake Arthur; and numerous great and great-great- grandhildren.
