James Stiewig

August 8, 1941 — January 20, 2019

James D. Stiewig, 77, passed away January 20, 2019. He was a life time resident of Artesia.

Jim was born August 8, 1941 in Artesia to William & Kate Stiewig, who preceded him in death.

He led a truly amazing accomplished life with many obstacles facing him.

At the age of 19 he was involved in a car accident that crushed his spine. He was sent to a rehabilitation center in Denver, Colorado and started an intense program of exercise daily from 9 AM to 5 PM. He believed in this program and thought he would walk out of the center and not be in a wheel chair.

Jim finally began to face the cruel truth and reality that he would never walk again. More determined than ever to cope with whatever life might hold for him, he began his journey.

His new future began with a job as bookkeeper & accountant at a small firm in Loco Hills. In addition to this, he attended college in Roswell four nights a week studying business accounting, aiming at a college degree from Eastern NM University.

Meanwhile, a friend & mentor recommended him for employment at Central Valley Electric. Jim's interest in the Co-op venture landed him the title of Assistant Manager to the Co-op. He was employed with Central Valley Electric from 1965 - 2001.

Jim loved the outdoors and had many deer hunting and fishing trips with family and friends.

He leaves behind sisters Anita Hartley & Billie Sue Sharp (Arthur) and many nieces and nephews: Andy Wyatt (Gloria), Jackie Wyatt, Greg Frick (Rita), Michael Lindsey, Debbie Blessing (Van), Terry White (Ron) and Marshall Tandy (Chatin).

Our family would like to thank Betty Gallegos and Rachel Pleasant for the care and compassion you gave Jim to get through his last days.

He was an inspiration to many friends and family. He will always be in our hearts.

Memorial services celebrating Jim's life will be held at 10 AM Saturday, February 9th at Terpening & Son Mortuary in Artesia, NM.
