Born in Artesia on July 26, 1938, he was the beloved son of Cassie Mabel Williams and Eugene Boans. Gene attended Artesia High School and graduated in May 1956, laying the foundation for a lifetime of dedication to his family and community.
On October 18, 1959, Gene married the love of his life, Barbara Ann Weber. Together, they built a strong and loving family, raising three children: Sylvia, Robert, and Greg. Gene’s family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. In addition to his children, Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Barbara, his children and their spouses: Sylvia’s husband Kevin Wilson, Robert’s wife Lisa, and Greg’s fiancée Christina.
Gene’s family extended to his brother, Jerry Boans of Carlsbad, and his two nieces, Lisa Simmons and Dena Quigley. He was also a proud grandfather to Heather Valenzuela (Steven), Ashley Safken (Will), John David Runyan, and Chance Boans, as well as a great-grandfather to Kairi Starr, Tegan Starr, Elli Valenzuela, Beau Valenzuela, and Jameson Barry. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gene and Cassie, and his grandson, Devon Barry.
Gene’s work ethic and mechanical skills were evident throughout his career. He began working as a mechanic at Hart Motor Company and later served in the National Guard as a mechanic. His career path then led him to Southwest Potash Mine and, subsequently, to Navajo Refining, where he dedicated himself from 1969 until his retirement in 2000. Even after retiring, Gene enjoyed working on the family farm and was passionate about reloading.
