Ernest Carroll

May 27, 1950 — September 14, 2018

It is with great sadness that the family of Ernest L. Carroll announces his passing Friday, September 14, 2018, at the age of 68. Ernest was born May 27, 1950, in Paris, California, the son of Leland Caree' Carroll and Helen Jeanette Bennett. He was one of four children.

Ernest graduated from Hobbs High School in 1968 and went on to graduate from the University of Texas, and then from Texas Tech with his law degree. In 1985, he received his certification in Welding and Farriers School. He was the District Attorney in Lea County in the 80's and became a partner at Losee, Carson, Haas, and Carroll Law Firm where he practiced law for 20 years until he retired. He then became a Senior Landman and Special Projects for Yates Petroleum Corporation.

Ernest was a longtime resident of Artesia, well-respected man in the community and one hell of a trial attorney that was nicknamed the "Bulldog" in the court room. He specialized in oil and gas and potash. He was a member of the NRA, Elks Lodge, Rotary Club, an Honorary National Rotarian for Life, Chuck Wagon Trail Riders, and a member of the New Mexico & Texas Bar Association.

He had a passion and drive for life, a love for Appaloosa Horses, raised show horses and farmed. He was known as a very dedicated and hard worker and loved to go on trail rides and enjoyed sitting by a camp fire and enjoyed a good whiskey with friends and family. He was a gun enthusiast and avid hunter, who possessed a love for the outdoors. Ernest loved to share his wisdom and advice with everyone he knew.

Survivors include his loving kids, Julie and John Pinson and grandson Zack Pinson of Artesia, New Mexico; sister Diane Hayes and husband Dan of Alameda, California; brother Wally Roberts and wife Robbie of Crosby, Texas; nieces and nephews include Joseph & Krystal Roberts, Sarah & Caleb Wheeler, Shawn & Margaret Hayes, Kacy & Steve Woodley, and Megan Hayes; honorary son-in-law Tom McCombs and daughter-in-law Kathy McCombs, grandkids Brady and Mattie, and lifelong best friend, Jim Scroggins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother Bob Carroll.

Ernest had many friends he made throughout life, thru experiences, clients, friends, co-workers, fellow horse lovers, and family. He would say "Remember me as I was and the good memories we've shared and hold on to those as I am in a better place, saddling my horse and riding off into the sunset. We shall one day meet again."

Family and friends gather in remembrance of Ernest where he resided with his kids at 1414 Cedar Lane, Artesia, NM. The family will hold a private ceremony for close friends and family at a later date.
