Dakota Neel

A memorial service will take place on Thursday, February 24, 2022 for Dakota Paul Neel. It will take place at 10:00 AM at the Hermosa Church of Christ. Michael Joiner and Andy Brazle will officiate.

Dakota passed away on Sunday, February 20, 2022 in Lubbock, Texas.

Dakota was born on May 22, 1989 in Carlsbad, New Mexico to Douglas Paul Neel and Dianna (Calvert) Neel.

Dakota grew up in Cottonwood and attended Artesia Public schools. He graduated from Artesia High School in 2008. He participated in sports and FFA. He attended Lubbock Christian University and graduated with a bachelor's in Wildlife Biology and Natural Resources. It was at LCU that he met the love of his life, Tara Mooney. They were married on May 18, 2013. Their son Everett Shepherd Neel was born on May 24, 2020. They made their home in Artesia. He was an EHS Coordinator for Concho and Spur Energy.


Dakota was known for his kindness, generosity, and humor. He and his family loved going to the mountains and going on four wheeling adventures. He loved to hunt with his dad, grandads, brother-in-laws, nephew, and cousins and later with many friends that he became acquainted with through hunting. He was extremely close to his sister Deonna and would talk to her every single day.

He is survived by his wife Tara and son Everett, his parents, his sister Deonna and husband Dane Wade of Lubbock, Tx. In-laws Terry and Lucinda Mooney of Euless, TX sister-in-law Lauren and Adam Lindsay of Hurst, TX, and brother-in-law Travis Mooney of Lubbock Texas. He is also survived by his nephew Cole and niece Allie Wade of Lubbock and niece Laikyn and nephew Breck Lindsay of Hurst, grandparents Don and Linda Calvert of Artesia, Aunts and Uncle's Donna and Tommy Scroggin and Denise and Martin Sevcik Sandra and Bill Boulden Rocky Neel and John and Tammy Neel all of Artesia. He is also survived by all of his Scroggin, Neel, and Boulden cousins whom he was very close to. He is preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Eva Neel of Artesia, New Mexico and uncle David Calvert.
