Ascension   Marquez

June 7, 1931 — August 20, 2022

María Ascension "Nena" Velasco Marquez was born June 7th, 1931 and passed away on August 20, 2022 at home. She was 91 years old. Ascension will be remembered as a dedicated wife, loving mother and grandmother, a wonderful cook and a skilled gardener and seamstress. She could frequently be found making wellness visits to friends or the elderly.

She truly enjoyed her plants, flowers and trees and tended her garden consistently. There are many stories about Ascension sewing dresses for weddings, proms and for her children's everyday clothes. People would often ask her children where they bought such nice outfits and they would respond "my mom made this".

Ascension deeply loved her grandchildren and often helped take care of them, she always wanted them around. She is remembered as warm with an open house to visitors, constantly in the kitchen making food as an offering of love. Ascension loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. Her family fondly recounts her asaderos, biscochitos, tamales and empanadas. She could do it all and anything she made was delicious.

She is survived by her three children: Daughter Irene Bustamante and husband Epifanio, daughter Annabell Escamilla and husband Gerard and her son Louis Marquez as well as her sisters Guadalupe Gonzales, Senovia Savedra and Manuela "Nell" Gale. Ascension had 9 grandchildren Sonia Aguilar, Christy Bustamante- Linston, Epie Bustamante, Enrique Bustamante, María Teresa Escamilla, Guillermo Bustamante, Analisa Herring, Emilio Escamilla and Paikea Marquez as well as 10 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. Ascension was preceded in death by her parents Enrique and Mauricia Velasco, husband Jesus Marquez, her son Noel Marquez and her brothers Ramon Velasco and Moises Velasco. Jesus passed away in July 2012. They were married for 59 years.
