Gary D. Scott, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior Sunday, January 14, 2018 .
Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 18 at the First Baptist Church in Artesia, NM. Ronnie Williams will officiate at the service with burial to follow at Woodbine Cemetery. Pallbearers are grandsons Devan Scott, Dawson Scott, Robert Archuleta and Tyler Schmidt, nephews Ross Horner, Perry Williams and Landon Mayberry and long-time friends of the family Matt Greenhaw and Darin Dodd.
Gary was born July 14, 1945, in Silver City, NM to Charles W. Scott and Kathleen (Katie) Martin Scott. He moved to Artesia from Portales, NM in 1951.
On August 21, 1964 he married his high school sweetheart Gloria J. (Whittington) Scott in Artesia, NM and were happily married for 53 years.
Gary retired in 2010 as the Publisher of the Artesia Daily Press after 55 years of service with the newspaper. He began his association with the Artesia Daily Press in 1955 when at 9 year’s old he applied for the position of newspaper carrier. The circulation manager at the time was skeptical he could perform the duties as the open newspaper route was five miles long and he rode a bicycle. He proved him wrong and remained a paperboy until he was offered the position of assistant circulation manager in 1961. He ascended to circulation manager in 1963, advertising manager in 1969, business manager in 1973 and in 1985 was promoted to the title of publisher which he held until retirement.
Gary was a member of the Artesia Downtown Lions Club for many years fulfilling the duties of the clubs Lion Tamer. He was an avid Artesia Bulldog sports fan and enjoyed watching and attending Dallas Cowboy and Oklahoma Sooner football games.
He truly loved spending time with family and friends and for many years could be seen jogging or walking the streets of Artesia, but his true passion was his love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and enjoyed sharing the gospel or praying for anyone who would listen.
He is survived by his wife, Gloria J. Scott, of the family home; son Gary D. Scott, Jr and wife Renee of Artesia, NM ; son Spencer A. Scott and wife Melanie of Edmond, OK; grandchildren Lacey Archuleta and husband Robert of Roswell, NM; Kelsey Schmidt and husband Tyler of Visalia, CA; Devan Scott and Kalea Melson of Norman, OK; Dawson Scott of Edmond, OK; Skylor Morton of Omaha, NE; Taylor Morton of Lubbock, TX; Melessia Guevara of Weatherford, OK; Jayla Guevara of Weatherford, OK; Sterling Crook of Artesia, NM; great-grandchildren Tucker Scott, Kash Pearce, Lyndon East and soon-to-be-born Zoie Scott; sister Charlotte Holland of Vancouver, WA; brother Charles Scott of Artesia, NM; sister Patti Horner and husband Ronald of Artesia, NM; brother Rodney Scott of Artesia, NM; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Kathie Ragsdale.
Gloria, I am sorry for the loss of your husband. This is late because I monitor the obituaries for my workplace and saw the announcement after the fact.
May the comfort of the Holy Spirit fill you. May the peace of Jesus cover you. May the Lord be with you and your family during the next few months and every time you feel his loss.
Blessings to you.
