Bernardo Howard, 54, passed away on the evening of Friday April 14, in Lubbock, TX with both of his daughters by his side. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Terpening & Son Mortuary.

Bernardo was born in Sidgewick County, Witchita, KS on May 17, 1962 to Dan and Enedena (Chavez) Howard. As a teen, Bernardo excelled academically and as an athlete. Bernardo attended Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, Kansas. Here he made a huge impact on the community and his peers. He participated in multiple activities throughout his school. Bernardo was active in baseball, basketball, track and field, and choir. Bernardo placed multiple school records which still stand as of today. Out of high school, Bernardo signed pro with the Philadelphia Phillies. Bernardo went on to play for the Phillies for four years. Upon leaving the Phillies, Bernardo relocated himself to Artesia, New Mexico. Once in Artesia, Bernardo was blessed with two young daughters. Shortly after the birth of his second daughter, Bernardo enrolled in college for a medical degree. He served in the medical industry for 22 years before his health and sight started to decline. He was diagnosed as a diabetic and was legally blind in his late 40’s. Even faced with his blindness, Bernardo enrolled himself into the Alamogordo School of the Blind and into National American University in pursuit of his 2nd Bachelors degree. Bernardo went on to graduate from the School of the Blind as well as graduate with a 4.0 GPA and honors from National American University.
Anyone who knew Bernardo knew he was full of life, love, and laughter. He loved to sing and dance with his grandchildren. Bernardo could always be seen with a smile on his face and his heart on his sleeve. Bernardo is survived by two daughter Santana Howard and Sahara Howard(Skye Huerta), his fiance Mary Matthews, two sisters Patty Howard and Maria Howard along with her husband Eddie. Bernardo is also survived by all six of his brothers Daniel Lee Howard and his wife Theresa, David Howard, Armando Howard and his wife Latonya Howard, Michael Howard, Roberto Howard, and Rick King. Oh such sweet memories I have of Bernard. He was a CNA on night shift at Artesia Good Samaritan when I worked there as the night nurse.
He was a very kind man, took wonderful care of our residents.
He was another blessing GOD put in my life.
Blesding and Prayers to his BEAUTIFUL FAMILY.

I wasn't aware that he passed. He was a Resident Advisor for the ENMU-Roswell back in the early to mid 90's for Upward Bound in which he monitored and inspired 50 young high school kids throughout the summer. I remember when he used to call random room checks and would check the oddest places to see if we cleaned. Lol He was a strong and determined man that made a difference in MANY of our young lives back then. I called him "B". I'm blessed to have him on video from my teen years. He was very special to me and he always remembered me when I saw him. May his children know what a difference he made in our lives and how special he was. Godspeed B....

I hate to hear of Bernardo's passing. I haven't been home much over the last 30 years and haven't seen Bernardo in many years. He was very kind and an extremely positive person. I know he gave every bit of himself away in love, caring and kindness. Prayers to his family. He left a great legacy for his children and grandchildren.
